BMW’s Recalled Due to Their Takata Airbag

Recently, there has been a recall of the 2015 models of the BMW X3 and X4 SUVs and the 2014 and 2015 X5s.

There is a new concern regarding the Takata airbags that has led to the recall of about 4,000 SUVs from the U.S. and Canada by the German automaker BMW. It is being reported that this new problem is not the same as the previous problem of rupturing airbag inflators dispersing metal shards into the compartment of the vehicle resulting in severe injuries and deaths. The new abnormality has been attributed to poor welds which can be as harmful as the metal shards. This increases the dangers to Takata airbags, which has led to a historic automobile recall in the United States, triggering many lawsuits on the Takata airbag.

What did the latest recall entail?

The recall that occurred recently involved the 2015 model of BMW X3 and X4 SUVs and the 2014 and 2015 X5s. The airbag inflators in front of the driver can detach from a plate, discharging metal and debris. BMW has confirmed that this discharge can result in injuries or death to those in the vehicle. No injuries have been reported so far. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these inflators having issues were only installed in the recalled models.

It was also stated by the federal auto safety agency that every inflator must be tested before fixed in cars to ensure safety. According BMW, earlier recalls were not due to inflator issues. The problem was linked by Takata to welds that were not properly fixed in a factory in Mexico. This shortcoming was discovered after a 2014 BMW X5 was involved in an accident in Georgia on July 22 and the metal that was shot out from the airbag inflator destroyed the inside of the vehicle. When they start recalling, there will be free replacement of driver airbags but there is shortage of parts.

Injuries that could occur

This flaw could result in injuries that are really fatal just similar to the Takata airbag inflator recalls that killed 10 people in the U.S. and injured many worldwide. This current recall by BMW is not as a result of the defects that caused the recall of millions of vehicles, but the reason is still as a result of an auto defect that is really dangerous

If you have one these vehicles in your possession, a recall notice will be likely sent to you. In case you don’t receive notice, then go NHTSA’s website to check if your vehicle is among the recall by inputting your VIN. If for instance your vehicle is among those recalled, it would be wise to heed to the instructions of the automaker to repair your vehicle.
